Daily Writing Topic: Creativity
Creativity. Suggested approaches: January is International Creativity Week (linked page includes some suggestions and quotations about creativity). What does "being creative" mean to you? Are you creative? What makes you think you are or aren't? Are there things you are more creative about than others? What is the most creative thing you have ever done or thought of doing? What things destroy your creativity? Describe someone who's creativity you admire and give examples of their creativity; describe someone utterly lacking in creativity and give examples. Is creativity learned or inborn? Or, just write something very creative.

An All-New Santa. All descriptions, memories and traditions about Santa are erased from existence. Describe a totally new and different Santa. He no longer dresses in red or has a white beard. He no longer lives at the North Pole. He no longer travels in a sled pulled by reindeer. He no longer goes "ho, ho, ho." He no longer has elves. He no longer delivers presents to children around the world in a single night. He no longer visits department stores so children can sit on his lap. He no longer slides down chimneys or eats cookies and milk in people's homes. What does your all new Santa do instead, and what does he look and act like?

New Year's Resolutions. Do you make them? Why or why not? Are New Year's Resolutions a good idea or a bad one? What were yours last year, and what happened with them? Have you ever kept one? What might they be for 2006? There's still 8 days left in 2005, and Christmas isn't even here yet, but we won't be in school when the new year kicks in, and by January 4 most people who bother to think about or make New Year's Resolutions will already have broken them. For fun, you could make up stupid New Year's Resolutions, different than the Top 10.

If we watch your movie selection, there will be a writing assignment for the whole class to go with it, after watching it. A good source for ideas about movies is IMDB.com. Senior Seminar Topic: Nominate Movies
Nominate Movies. Pick a movie related to Literary movements and explain why it would be a good one to watch as a class. It may either be about a literary movement or representative artist (like Pollock), or an example of the movement style (Nightmare Before Christmas -- surrealism). It must also be rated PG-13 or lower or be a mild 'R' and be available on DVD. A good source for ideas about movies is IMDB.com. An IMDB keyword search also yields a page of links to related movies, as for surrealism. Any 20th century literary movement is OK, but surrealism (focusing on creativity and the unconscious mind) is probably a good focus on since there are a lot of good related movies, like Vanilla Sky or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. We will probably watch two movies before semester end, one next week before break (has to be non-'R') and one as part of the finals activity.
You should also spend some time familiarizing yourself with the other nominations from Period 4 and Period 5, as we will nominate and vote from these.

Tolerance. National Tolerance Week (Dec. 1 - 7) ends today. The preceding link is an editorial that talks about why tolerance is important and why this "holiday" should be more widely observed. Some possibilities for writing about tolerance: Describe an incident that illustrates the significance of tolerance. What things do you have no tolerance for? An experience where your tolerance was tested? Which things can you tolerate, but only with effort? Have you ever suffered from someone else's intolerance? To what extent should teachers tolerate "unacceaptable" behavior? Parents? How do you feel about zero tolerance policies, like some schools have adopted towards weapons, guns, etc. Do you know of any examples of good or bad effects from “zero tolerance.” What could be done to promote tolerance, to make people more tolerant? Daily Writing Topic: LSE Sex In The Hall Incident
LSE Sex In The Hall Incident. Thoughts, opinions, additional information, or other incidents related to this? Some information links:
Police cite two students for having sex in school
Principal disputes police version of school sex incident
Here is the email note Dr. Hunter-Pirtle asked teachers to share with their 5th period students:
We handled an incident earlier in the week where two students were in the lower Prasch hallway during lunch, and they were having sex. It was down in the hallway near where card tables and folding chairs are stored, and the lights are turned off. An administrator walked into this and almost tripped over them because it is so dark. About twelve students were behind the gate that is locked near the swimming pool, and they were trying to see what was going on once the administrator started talked to the students. The students were disciplined and ticketed by the police. Media has a copy of the police report, and they are reporting students having sex with others standing around watching. That is incorrect. A reporter from Channel 7 drove around at lunch yesterday and stopped two students who were walking. He asked them about the incident; the students didn't know about it, so the reporter told them about it and then filled them in on his version of what happened and then filmed a reaction from the students to show on the 5:00 p.m. news. I had heated words with the reporter yesterday afternoon about reporting accurate information, filming under-age students, who don't know anything about the incident, and not getting parental consent to film students. This will be reported by media today.

Sen. Seminar Optional Topic: React To The Scream
React To The Scream. The Scream, by German artist Edvard Munch around 1893, is a good example of early, pre-abstract Expressionism. React in writing to this work of art. Here are some possible approaches:
1) Use the picture as a starting point, write what ever comes first to mind and let your thoughts flow freely from there. 2) Describe the picture; try to capture it in words. 3) Write about what you like or don't like about the picture. 4) Explain what you think the picture is about, or what you think might have inspired the artisit to create it. 5) Write a story or poem, etc., inspired by the picture. 6) compare it to other expressionist works of art (helpful to give the links to view those, also). This could include comparison to the more recent development of Abstract-Expressionism, started by Jackson Pollock as seen in the film we watched.

Senior Seminar Writing Topic: Expressionistic Art
Expressionistic Art. Find an expressionistic work of art and write about it, starting with the link to the internet page where the work you pick can be viewed. A starting place for finding a picture would be a Google search like this. Not all the images that come up on this kind of search will be examples of expressionism, so think about whether the picture has anything to do with the definition of the movement.
Once you find a picture, here are some possible approaches:
1) Use the picture as a starting point, write what ever comes first to mind and let your thoughts flow freely from there. 2) Describe the picture; try to capture it in words. 3) Write about what you like or don't like about the picture. 4) Explain what you think the picture is about, or what you think might have inspired the artisit to create it. 5) Write a story or poem, etc., inspired by the picture. 6) compare it to other expressionist works of art (helpful to give the links to view those, also).

Daily Writing Topic: In The Halls
In The Halls. At LSE, what do you observe in the halls on a regular basis? What are the best or most interesting things that go on there? The worst or least interesting? What do you do in the halls? Any interesting hall experiences, either participated in or observed? Hall pet peeves? Is passing time a problem for you, or is it just an unnoticeable and manageable part of your day? Do you have any hall strategies? Feelings about planners as hall passes? Could anything be done by the administration to improve hall use? Since your lockers are in the halls, things related to lockers would fit.

Daily Writing Topic: Me and My Money
Me and My Money. Where does your money come from (jobs, allowance, bogus fund raisers, sales of illegal goods, theft, etc.)? How do you manage it (bill paying, checks, banks, ATMs, cash, piggy banks, savings, etc.)? What do you spend it on (cagetories of things, trends, big items like cars, etc.)? What needs changing in your financial situation? Something related to these kinds of things. Or (since we've never been too picky about how close you stay to the topic) just write about (the song or the stuff).

Daily Wriitng Topic: Unsent Letter
Unsent Letter. Write a letter saying the things that you would like to say to someone but you probably never will. Could be to a parent, administrator, teacher, counselor, co-worker, boss, club or group associate or leader, friend, official, etc.
This topic was taken from the following, containing links to read other people's Unsent Letters:
"You have the chance to say anything and everything, without worrying how your words would be received. In some ways, it can allow you to free yourself from the grief and regret of loss, and help you find peace with your past." Today's pick provides its visitors with a way to deal with that unfinished business on their mind by writing an anonymous unsent letter. Though the someone it is written to will never read it, the expression of "thoughts that were anchored so deeply within" can be most therapeutic. The small collection of letters submitted so far each offer a glimpse into someone's life... and pain... and emotional release. [Pajatti.net]

This is so stupid. Or "That is so dumb," or something along those lines overheard in p. 4 Senior Seminar. Tell about something that could get that kind of reaction from you. In what way was it "stupid," "dumb," etc. Of course, you could say it about this topic, but that wouldn't be very original, would it?

Daily Wriitng Topic: Grade Final Test
Grade Final Test. For 10 - 15 minutes, use a combination of browsing and closer readings to get a good sampling of the responses from this class on yesterday's Final Topic. Then, tell how you would be willing to contribute to grading all those papers by the end of next Thursday. The goal is for all the papers to be graded in a fair manner, possibly with feed back, and for everyone in the class, including the teacher, to make an equivalent contribution in accomplishing this. This does not necessarily mean that everyone in the class has to be involved with closely reading or grading all the papers, or that everyone has to complete the same tasks with regard to them. Divisions of labor are possible, like dividing the class in two groups that would each grade half the papers (but this might not be fair), or having one group give letter grades to each paper and the other group making comments. Beyond this, there is the question of what kind of grade to give. You could give everyone full credit who has something displayed on shared answer page, or to everyone who has 30 or more words in their answer, or everyone could grade all the papers as an 8, 9 or 10 (out of 10), and then take the average of these (or have everyone do this). Basically, how would you involve everyone in class equally in getting these papers graded. In your answer, refer by title or content to at least one of the Topic #40 answers from the class. This could be your own. These answers will be automatically posted for others to read on the page below the Topic #40 answers. You also should read a reasonable sampling of these as people begin to submit them.

Daily Writing Topic: Your Time Use In This Class
Final Test: Explain, Tell About, and Defend Your Use Of Time In This Class This Semester. How is this a final test? For one thing, it is a competition. You are trying to write the best answer for this question for the students in this period. Sharing of these papers online is not optional, but they will be displayed without any author identification except the period and whatever the author may give away in the title and body texts submitted. Additionally, all students are required, as part of the final, to read and grade all of the responses to this topic for this period. More about that later. Besides, Mr. Williams will be completing this assignment along with the students, and displaying his work at intervals as it progresses. Students will have the option of doing this also, and it is advised. This will be your opportunity to see if you can write a better answer than Mr. Williams and other members of the class, given the same topic and same amount of time.

Daily Writing Topic: Your Dream Room
Describe your Dream Room. You don't get unlimited space -- let's say no bigger than this classroom. It doesn't have to be the same shape, but it has to be one level -- I suppose a loft might be allowed. What would be in it? How would it be decorated? Where would it be? What part of a house or apartment would it be in (basement, 30th floor apartment, etc.) Windows (and their placement)? What technical aspects would you want to specify (heating, power, lighting, doors or other access, closets, fixtures, etc.)? You also can specify floor, wall, and ceiling material. Furniture and appliances and electronics? Fireplace? Pet accomocations? Make sure to leave room for yourself and anyone you would want to spend time there.

Daily Writing Topic: Recent LSE Policy Changes--LSSU
Recent LSE Policy Changes--LSSU
Lincoln Southeast Student Union
We the Students of the Lincoln Southeast Student Union (LSSU)
find these changes unfair and counterproductive.
- Shortened passing periods
- Changes in club day
- Shortened lunches
- Too many juniors in A-Lot
- Censorship of out of school clubs
- Threatening to take away open campus lunch
- Useless planners being required
- Student ID's being checked
- Censorship of Pep Rally's
- Lack of renovations
- Fall break shortened
Note: the topic results from some students in my LSE Senior Seminar Class, including James Fouche, Chapman Scarborough, and Andrea Beyersdorf, who have also spearheaded the LSSU idea, running it by Mr. Czapla, ets. Mr. Tidball has graciously consented to sponser LSSU. Remember, if you are responding in a persuasive vein (as opposed to merely venting, etc.) it is always a good idea to anticipate and pre-empt the opposing arguments.

Daily Writing Topic: Textual Tatoo -- Pick Yours
Textual Tatoo -- Pick Yours. If you would have to choose a quote, verse, lyric, poem or other textual message to have tattooed on your body, what would it be? In what way is that text significant to you? Which body part would you put it on? Which representation system would you use (which language, lettering style, color etc.)? If you want to talk about graphics to go with it, that's fine, but focus on the textual message. You might be one of those few youth that would never have a tattoo, or maybe you wouldn't want any text, but just pretend for the sake of the topic.

Describe a time when a person or people overreacted to something you did, or when you overreacted to something, or when someone else overreacted to something or someone not directly related to anything you did (example: was the Patriot Act an overreaction to 911?). You could also express opinions about how to avoid overreacting, how to handle it when you or some one else does, or what causes overreactions to happen.
Here's one person's story on this subject, The American Dream: Free Enterprise (warning: contains profane language and drug related content -- I wonder who will overreact to the fact that I linked to this).

I have broadened the topic to include all of the The Seven Deadly Sins, of which laziness -- also known as sloth, idleness, wastefulness of time, or acedia -- is fourth on the list (starting with the worst sin): Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony and Lust.

Starting September 11, there will be an Anti Bullying Awareness Week.
We would like to encourage all teachers to assign, encourage, and suggest that students write stories about their experience of being bullied, bullying, or being a bystander in this situation.
We will collect the writings in the library the week of September 11 and hopefully publish a book on Bullying Experiences.
I was bullied as a child due to my weight. When we played leapfrog, the goal was to leap on Donna and make her cry -- never happened -- I laughed when I hit the ground and cried inside my heart. Therre isn't a fat-joke name that I have not been called, even to this day. Recently a child made fun of me at the Open Harvest Store. Guess what I did?
Bullying Hurts at an any age. Donna
Anti-Bullying Awareness Week Writing Submission Format:
Student, please tell us your experience.
1. Give your writing a title.
2. Submit your work in the box in the library the week of September 12-17.
3. Sign the work; we will remove the signature if you so desire.
4. indicate the removal request after your signature.

Daily Writing Topic: Education
Write some of your thoughts relating to education, learning, or school. If possible, deal with larger issues like what's best or worst about our system of education, how it could be improved, the relationship between learning and school, what is good teaching, what qualities does an ideal student have, etc., but it is also OK to focus in on smaller related issues, like dress code, AP credits, testing, homework expectations, etc.

Daily Writing Topic: Injury/Illness or 60 Second Story
Two topic choices today (or you could combine them. 1) an experience with or reflection about Illness or Injury, or 2) a 60 Second Story. Click on the immediately previous link to view examples of the second choice. It's part of a contest announced on May 18 (explained here), and they are only posting one a day so there are only four so far. The idea is for people to make a 60 second video accompanied by a fitting story which is read aloud in the time it s playing. I viewed the four videos; it worked best to download them to my computer (click on the link while holding the Control key and then select the download destination), because them when you click on the .mov file it will play with (probably) QuickTime, and you can use the view menu to double the size of the display window -- otherwise they are really small. The sound on some of them was kind of hard to hear. Of course, you won't be able to make a video to go with your story, but you can think of what you might use (60 seconds doesn't take much) and possibly even describe what it would be along with the text that you write to be read with it. I was only going to use this topic today, but decided to add an optional choice in case it was too confusing. I don't know why Illness or Injury came to mind; maybe the topics have been too upbeat lately.

Daily Writing Topic: About a Picture
Find a picture and use it as a starting point. You'll need to spend a little time, but not too much, finding a picture. Here are some links that might be helpful. (They will open in a new window.)
google.com
art-connection.com
dart.fine-art.com
www.pixiport.com
These last two links connect to a web page that is served from my laptop, so they will only work when my laptop is running.
Many more art links
Many more photography links
Copy the picture and paste it into the top of the document where you are going to write about it, so that the reader can see the picture you worked from. You can either just do a freewrite using the picture as a starting point (look at the picture, write the first thing that comes to mind and keep going -- maybe looking back at the picutre when you run out of things to write), or you can write about what you see in the picture (just describe it), or you can try to write a more planned story, poem, etc. to fit the picture.

Daily Writing Topic: Limits
Limits: Seem too limiting? Some things come readily to mind: speed limits and blood/alcohol limits (almost any legality, rule, controversy, etc. has much to do with limits); outer limits (tv show); "Push it to the limit one more time" (Eagles' song); limits on your patience; limits on your tolerance; limits to what you can do; setting personal limits; time limits (testing); limits to endurance; limits to the imagination; the serenity prayer; the difference between limits and limitation;etc. (It's a funny sounding word. Makes me think of an animal. There were a lot of littlie limits running around in the grass.)

Same as Yesterday: Pick a third First Line Story Starter and write a story for it. If you didn't finish the one from yesterday, that's OK; you can always go back to it later. Daily Writing Topic: First LIne Story Starter (1)
Pick one of the 17 Story Starters First Lines, and write a short story, or at least a substantial beginning to a story, using the Story Starters first line that you picked. This will be the topic for the rest of this week, including today (Wednesday 4/13). Each day, write a story starting with a different first line from the previous link. The first lines are from published story anthologies and are from a variety of authors. Before the first line, the title of the original story is given (you can use the same title), as well as the information about where the story was published and how many words were in the original story. Your story may be longer or shorter than the original; I included the word count so you would see that sometimes pieces of writing that are quite short are still considered to be full short stories. Usually, a published short story is in the range of 6 - 12 thousand words, but all the ones from which these first lines were taken are much shorter. These are sometimes referred to as short-short stories, flash fiction, or sudden fiction; it is currently a very fashionable form of writing. It is OK to make small changes to the first lines (like a different name) to make it work better with your idea. I have the books that these first lines were taken from and will make them available to you next week. It is harder to come up with your own approach if you first read what the original author wrote.

Daily Writing Topic: Your Website Recommendations
Someone has asked you to send them a list of five websites that will enjoyably pass time on a rainy afternoon. What list do you send them?
posted from blogliners
Additionally: Less or more than five would be OK, too. And yes, I know you could simply paste a few links down for this one and be done with it. You won't get many words that way, though. If that's not an issue with you, so be it. For those who want to get a little writing in, a brief description of each link would be helpful. While it's true that people could just go to the link and check it out themselves, they might be more likely to do so if it sounds interesting. Sometimes a site doesn't look interesting at first sight, but if you click around a little bit good stuff turns up; you could give the reader some hints to help them not miss the best stuff that might be a little hidden on the sites you list. Also, a little information about how you discovered the sites might be interesting. This might be a good one to post (use comments link below) where others in the class can see it, so you can check out your classmates' favorite sites. Don't post links that are extremely school inappropriate, however (these are OK in your daily topics folder), or at least accompany them with the NSFW (Not Safe For Work) label. --dwillia
